Elgin, at one point, used to be a powerhouse of American made watches. Between 1864 to 1968, Elgin’s factory on the outskirts of Chicago produced nearly six million units of both pocket and wrist watches. This particular example is one of their ladies models with a striking octagonal shaped case in a beautiful gold filled finish. A engraved pattern of floral inspired filigree decorates the top portion of the case and the round dial features a series of different layers of silver and cream colored sections with filigree engravings and guilloche concentric circle patterns. Yellow gold filled Arabic numerals have been hand applied to the dial and the hour and minute syringe hands look nearly brand new in their original blued steel finish and covered by a domed acrylic crystal. A winding crown with a synthetic sapphire cap operate buttery smooth to power the hand winding movement and the original mesh bracelet with filigree folding clasp are both in wonderful condition and ready for many more years of service.
